The Tar Heels are losing one of their scholarship wide receivers to the transfer portal as of Tuesday night. Junior wide receiver Roscoe Johnson announced via social media that he will enter the transfer portal.
The former 3✮ wide receiver from Union, SC was one of just two wide receivers to commit to Tar Heels during the 2016 class. In his four seasons on campus, Johnson has caught just 14 passes for 157 yards, with his best season coming as a redshirt freshman. This season, Johnson has played just 29 offensive snaps and caught just two passes. Johnson was active in for nine games this season, playing a big role on special teams.
The good news is, the Tar Heels are not scheduled to lose any other wide receivers this offseason. Junior Dazz Newsome is eligible to enter the draft, but, while he has had a very strong season, it seems unlikely that he’ll enter such a loaded 2020 wide receiver draft class. Fellow juniors Beau Corrales and Rontavius Groves are also expected to return, as is co-leading Dyami Brown, who isn’t eligible for the NFL Draft until next year. The depth at the position also remains in good shape, led by Antoine Green, Emery Simmons and Khafre Brown, as well as the members of the 2020 recruiting class (Josh Downs, Ray Rose, Tylee Craft and Stephen Gosnell), all of whom will be looking to make an impact early in their career.
Johnson will have immediate eligibility wherever he ends up. As a graduate transfer he will have just one year of eligibility remaining.
