Heel Tough Blog: Steve Belichick Not Expected to Coach Against TCU

There has been much information on Steve Belichick and his situation since it was announced that he was taking a medical leave, but his status for the opener seems to have been determined.

According to a report from On3 Sports and Inside Carolina, the Tar Heels second year coordinator is not expected to be on the sideline in Dublin on Saturday as the team takes on TCU. The younger Belichick has been on medical leave from the team since August 6 and there have been no updates as to what his condition is or a timeline for his return.

Steve Belichick was one of the few positives that you point to last season because of the progress that the Tar Heels made as the season went along and the development that we saw from certain players on that side of the ball. Last season, the Tar Heels allowed 24.5 points per game (fewest since 2019) and 336.9 total yards per game (fewest since 2009). The hope was that he would be able to help this defense take another step this season, but with him currently away from the program, it makes it tougher for that to happen.

With Steve remaining out, On3 reports that his father, Bill, and defensive line coach Bob Diaco have been the guys forming the gameplan for the team on that side of the ball. They also report that Bill will be the one calling plays for the defense on Saturday, the first time since 2019.
