The bad news for the Tar Heel football program just continues to pour in.
According to a report from Inside Carolina, Tar Heel cornerback Thaddeus Dixon will be out for a “significant amount of time” due to an undisclosed injury.
The injury was suffered late in the second quarter of this past Saturday’s game against Clemson on a play where he dived to make an interception that was eventually overturned by replay.
His injury will leave the Tar Heels without arguably their best defensive player for an extended period of time. So far this season, Dixon has collected 14 total tackles, 2.0 tackles for loss and three pass breakups while allowing just nine of his 16 targets to be caught for 151 yards and a touchdown.
While he hasn’t been perfect in the last two games, this is as significant a loss this team could have suffered and means they need other guys to take major leaps in his absence. Sophomore Jaiden Patterson took a bulk of the snaps on the outside for the team on Saturday with Dixon drawing the assignment on slot receiver Antonio Williams and had his ups and downs. Patterson allowed five of his seven targets to be caught for 38 yards, while registering six total tackles and two pass breakups. The Tar Heels will need him to continue to grow into that role if this team is going to take any sort of step in the right direction as a pass defense.
