The Tar Heels are in the process of piecing together their roster for the 2026-27 season right now and the team has a new backcourt player that they have officially contacted.
As first reported by Tar Heel Illustrated on Tuesday night, the Tar Heels have officially been in contact with Memphis transfer guard Curtis Givens III. He will have two years of eligibility remaining wherever he eventually lands.
Givens, who is ranked as the No. 227 overall player and No. 46 point guard in the portal according to On3, is in the portal after spending just one season at Memphis following his transfer from LSU last offseason. Givens, 6’3, 185 lbs., started 15 of the 25 games that he played in averaging 9.4 points, 2.1 rebounds and 2.3 assists in 25.6 minutes per game. He shot 43.1% from the field, 36.5% from three and just 66.1% from the foul line, numbers that certainly won’t blow anyone away.
I think I speak for all Tar Heel fans when I say this better be someone that they are looking at for a reserve role, although I would rather those minutes go to Isaiah Denis if he returns because he provides more upside. The Tar Heels need to continue to chase bigger targets at the point guard spot to find a difference maker that can improve upon the play the team got there under Hubert Davis’ direction.
