Earlier today, it was reported by CBS Sports and confirmed by Inside Carolina that UNC will begin a home-and-home series with Georgetown this upcoming non-conference season, with UNC hosting the first contest, and the return game to follow next year. The Tar Heels and the Hoyas have a long history against one another, with UNC earning its first national championship under Dean Smith back in 1982, when Michael Jordan announced his arrival to the basketball world, hitting the game-winning jumpshot. Their most recent matchup came in the 2007 NCAA Tournament, when the Hoyas took down Carolina in overtime of the Elite Eight, on their way to their most recent Final Four. Overall, Carolina is 4-5 all-time against the former Big East power.
This is another known opponent for UNC this upcoming non-conference season, a schedule that is far easier than the one Carolina faced last season. Carolina will host Kansas on November 14th and will face off against St. Bonaventure and Michigan State over the Thanksgiving holiday. In addition to those games, Carolina will play against Ohio State in the CBS Sports Classic on the Saturday before Christmas, and they are still waiting to learn their ACC/SEC Challenge opponent, a game that will be away from Chapel Hill, after back-to-back home games in that event. Other known opponents for UNC include Central Arkansas, Radford, Navy, USC Upstate, East Carolina, and NC Central.
