The Tar Heels are in the midst of a search to replace legendary coach Mack Brown, and they may be looking to do it with one of the most accomplished coaches in the sport's history.
According to Grant Hughes of Inside Carolina, the Tar Heels interviewed legendary NFL coach Bill Belichick for their job vacancy earlier this week. He is a part of a group of interviews that the program hosted throughout the last week which also contains Tulane head coach Jon Sumrall and Georgia defensive coordinator Glenn Schumann. As of right now, this is the only college job that Belichick has expressed interest in to this point.
These reports come a week after a message on one of Inside Carolina's message boards said that there was interest from UNC higher-ups about bringing Belichick to Chapel Hill to replace Brown. According to multiple fans, well-known poster ‘Mac ttp’ posted on one of the premium boards that one of his top trusted sources told him that multiple members of the UNC Board of Trustees are pushing for legendary NFL coach Bill Belichick to be the hire. Belichick, who will be 73 before the start of next season, is apparently so desperate to get back into coaching that he is “prepared to take it”.
Combine those reports with the confirmed interview and this is no longer just a rumor that we can just disregard. While Belichick is seen as maybe the greatest coach to ever grace an NFL sideline, this would be an absolutely horrendous move by the Tar Heels. Hiring a coach who is not even a year younger than Brown would be irresponsible, especially when you consider he has never coached at the college level. Let's hope that this interview was done to satisfy the Board of Trustees and that he is not being held in the same regard that some of the other rumored top candidates are. This is a decision that the Board of Trustees needs to stay out of and allow Bubba Cunningham and his staff to do what they were brought in to do.
