After Hubert Davis was fired on Tuesday night, staff changes are expected, as Carolina’s head coaching search is on the way. But before Carolina could make their hire, they had already lost a valuable assistant, as Marcus Paise is leaving UNC to join Wes Miller’s new staff at Charlotte, according to Inside Carolina. Paige is a former standout UNC player, playing at Carolina from 2013-16, guiding the Tar Heels to the 2016 Final Four, before losing the national championship at the buzzer. After a mini pro career, Paige got into coaching and has served on the Carolina staff for the last three years. This move doesn’t come as a surprise, as Paige was willing to leave Chapel Hill to continue to grow as a coach, but the administration was hopeful to keep Paige on the new staff, to keep a UNC contact on the new staff, which will feature a head coach without ties to the UNC program.
Miller was hired as Charlotte’s new head coach earlier this week, after five seasons at Cincinnati, where he was fired after not making the NCAA Tournament during his five years on the job. Miller was considered for the UNC opening after the retirement of Roy Williams back in 2021, but Carolina opted to promote Hubert Davis instead of hiring Miller, after a successful run at UNC-Greensboro. In his 15-year coaching career, Miller has posted a 285-209 record, with four regular-season titles and two conference titles, with a 0-2 mark in the NCAA Tournament.
