Heel Tough Blog: UNC Veteran QB Announces Decision to Transfer

Bleacer Report

After two seasons with the UNC football program, veteran QB Max Johnson announced his decision to transfer away from the Tar Heels. Johnson joined Carolina two years ago, when he transferred in from Texas A&M, committing to play for Mack Brown. He opened as the starter for the team in the season opener at Minnesota, where he suffered a gruesome leg injury that forced him to miss the rest of the 2024 season. After Carolina added Gio Lopez in the spring portal last off-season, Lopez beat Johnson out for the right to start for Bill Belichick. He did, though, appear in four games this year, including a start in the home loss to the Clemson Tigers, and across his time, he went 54/87, for 432 yards, and two touchdowns.

Johnson has spent six seasons in college football across three programs, but he will seek to use one year of eligibility that his injuries have taken away. Across his two seasons in Chapel Hill, Johnson played in only 5 of the possible 25 games, in large part due to injury. In his career, Johnson has thrown for over 6,000 yards, with 49 touchdowns and 13 interceptions, including nearly 3,000 yards, 27 scores, and 6 interceptions as a sophomore at LSU.
