After losing Isaiah Denis, Jaydon Young, and Derek Dixon to the transfer portal, the portal entries didn’t stop there, as sophomore wing Jonathan Powell has announced he’s entering the transfer portal, after one season with the UNC program. Powell arrived in Chapel Hill with high hopes after a strong start to his career at West Virginia, and while he certainly had his moments, Powell never developed into the perimeter scorer Carolina was hoping for, averaging 4.8 points per game, on 38% shooting from the field, and 37% from behind the arc. After starting 32 games and averaging over 30 minutes at West Virginia, Powell didn’t start a single game for North Carolina and played just over 16 minutes per contest.
At 6-6, Powell would be a nice addition in the transfer portal for any interested party, and you have to wonder if Mike Malone would like to have him back for next season. All of the aforementioned transfer portal entries have expressed interest in returning to Chapel Hill, and with a coaching change, you have to wonder if that will impact Powell’s interest to return to Carolina. Considering Malone’s familiarity with the Carolina roster, you have to figure that Malone would have a different role in mind for Powell, or at least be able to maximize him in a way the previous staff wasn’t able to, but only time will tell.
