Earlier tonight, the Carolina Basketball account reported and confirmed that senior guard Seth Trimble suffered a broken bone in his left forearm during a team workout on Sunday afternoon. This injury occurred just two days after UNC beat Kansas in the Smith Center, in a game in which Trimble scored 17 points in. In a statement released through the program, via GoHeels.com, head coach Hubert Davis said, “So sad for Seth. He's such a great kid and teammate and has worked so hard for his senior year. He loves being a Tar Heel, and we love him. The good news is he will be back at some point this year, and I know he will continue to be a great leader for us until he can get back in the lineup." Trimble will have surgery later this week, and that will open the door for a more timely answer on a potential timeline for his return.
The silver lining is that Carolina’s schedule is very manageable over the next two weeks, where they will host Radford, North Carolina Central, and Navy, before the team leaves for Fort Myers, Florida, where they will play both St. Bonaventure and nationally ranked Michigan State, which beat Arkansas over the weekend.
With that in mind, the pressure is on Kyan Evans to continue to grow as Carolina’s floor general, but this really opens the door for Virginia Tech transfer Jaydon Young and freshman Derek Dixon to increase their role and impact on this year’s team. Dixon has played the most minutes between the two, but with the only other option in the backcourt being fellow freshman Isaiah Denis, expect Hubert Davis to turn to Young, who is a proven player at the ACC level.
