While the focus for Carolina Basketball is on ETSU tonight, the program was busy adding to its schedule for the 2026-27 season, adding a home-and-home with the Georgia Bulldogs out of the SEC. This is a two-game agreement that will be completed with a return trip to Athens for the 2028-29 season. UGA is set to visit Chapel Hill on November 13th of next season, making it the third straight season that UNC will play a marquee non-conference opponent in the first week of the regular season.
Georgia is led by Mike White, who is in his fourth season with the program, after a long tenure with the Florida Gators. The Bulldogs are 65-47 and made the NCAA Tournament last year. They currently hold a 9-1 record this season, and are currently ranked 25th in the AP Poll, while boasting the highest scoring offense in college basketball, averaging over 98 points per game.
Since 1949-50, the two programs have place nine times, with UNC holding a 7-2 mark in those games respectively. In total, the two have faced off 18 times, with UNC holding a 13-5 edge all-time. The last time the two played was all the way back in 1998, a UNC win.
Slowly but surely, Carolina’s non-conference schedule for next season is coming together in terms of power conference opponents. UNC has already agreed to a home-and-home with the Butler Bulldogs out of the Big East, in addition to the return game with the Georgetown Hoyas, which will take place in the nation’s capital. With the ACC reducing its league schedule from 20 games down to 18, it was a move made to entice schools to schedule more challenging games out of league play, and UNC has answered the call. With the CBS Sports Classic contract set to expire after this season, it could open the door for UNC to commit to another big-time home-and-home or compete in another MTE.
In the meantime, the Tar Heels will look to improve to 10-1 tonight against ETSU. Stay tuned to the Heel Tough Blog for coverage of tonight’s game.
